The Vern Frazee Memorial Show

The Vern Frazee Memorial Show

With Intent, The Leo Project, and Changing Faith

By Paul Lichtenauer - Bullseye Bands Staff Writer

Saturday May 31st became a special day in the Kansas City music scene. Musicians, fans, friends, and family all came out to pay tribute to the life of a person who was near and dear to the hearts of many in attendance. Vern Frazee was known by many in the scene for his support and love for the music and the musicians. I personally had never met Vern, but I have known his son Joel (drummer for Intent) for about seven or eight years. Speaking to Joel before the show he told me that this show was providing closure on two fronts: the end of one of Kansas City’s most popular bands, Intent, and the passing of his father Vern. To not see Vern standing off to the side of the stage wearing his Intent t-shirt was going to hit him hard and contribute to an emotionally charged night.

Beyond the outpouring of emotions, the night had other oddities that don’t normally fit into a night of rock and metal in Kansas City. One being the fact that show started at seven in the evening and it was still light outside. The early start had little to no effect on the crowd making it out to catch Changing Faith though. By the time Rick, Kara and the rest hit the stage there were already something like 125 people through the door with an estimated 400-500 by the end of the night. Changing Faith came out with their guns blazing to kick off the night. Led by the familiar scream of “Let’s goooooo!” from Rick, the band kicked into a set that didn’t let up. Power and beauty are what make this band one to always keep an eye out for. Following Changing Faith was one of Kansas City’s favorites The Leo Project. TLP captivated the crowd right off the bat with an energetic stage show and killer songs. Tyler’s voice is what sets TLP apart from other bands in the genre. As has become the norm when TLP is playing, the crowd was singing along with every song, even taking over for Tyler at times.

To end the night we bore witness to the reunion of Intent. I can’t remember exactly when Intent broke up, but it has been at least three or four years since they last took the stage. With members going on to play in bands like The Leo Project, The Dollhouse Rumor, and Sidewise, the guys have stayed busy since the demise of Intent. Even guitarist Matt Watt came up from Florida to be there for the show. With a set that includes a beer keg drum, as well as an extra percussionist, Intent brought the house down. The crowd went insane as the band broke into songs like “Blessed is He” and “Feels Like Sunday”. Mosh pits broke out, and I even think I saw a guy try to crowd surf, only to fall on his face. I truly can’t remember the last time I saw anybody bloodied up in the pit of a local show. After years of being apart, the guys in Intent came together for the night like they had never split up.

For one more night, Vern was there. He was in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him.

One Degree Difference “Endless Circle of Fear” CD Review

Posted by: JasonFitzgerald   in CD Reviews

One Degree Difference Releases Their New CD, “Endless Circle of Fear”

Powerful. Passionate. Energetic. All words that could be used to describe the new cd, “Endless Circle of Fear” from local powerhouse One Degree Difference.

This sophomore release, the follow-up to 2005’s “A Sphere of Influence”, shows the band back in force. Featuring a new line-up, and a much heavier style.

This new disc, recorded at various studios around the area, has been a labor of love a year and a half in the making. Painstaking detail paid to every second of the recording, and it shows with a flawless sound.

The grace of guitar sensation Jeremiah Barber ebbs and flows from track to track, setting the strings on fire with skillful edge.

Powerful bass lines provided by Wayne Wilkes really fill out the songs well. From punchy and in your face to melancholy full of emotion, he really helps convey the dramatic elements of each and every track.

The drumming on the disc is impressive. Ryan Rothmeyer really shows his background in many different genres of music. His drumming is deceptively powerful.

The vocals on the cd, provided by Steve McAnulla, are precise, and wrought with raw emotion. Everything he says is crystal clear and direct in the meaning of the lyrics. He delivers his vocals with a presence and authority that demands your attention.

“Endless Circle of Fear” is the type of CD that any band, not just a local, unsigned, or independent one should be proud to release. The blood, sweat, and tears that were put into this recording really come through in every single note, second, and beat.

With One Degree Difference’s stronger, more solid lineup, this CD delivers a tour de force performance.

I highly recommend this cd to ANYONE who likes rock music. A recording like this is few and far between and it may be a while before we see many like it…

Redline Chemistry Revs Up for Rockfest

Posted by: JasonFitzgerald   in Show Reviews

With only three weeks left before Rockfest, Kansas City’s hard rock favorite, Redline Chemistry, decided to stop by Daveys Uptown for one last run-through before the big day.

Which big day you ask? That would be the day they will kick things off for 12 hours of metal and mayhem for 50,000 of KCs rabid rock fans. But first, they blew the roof off of Daveys.

The late show started off with Ligion, out of Nashville TN. Never having heard of these guys, I had no idea what to expect. They came out swinging. I was floored. This five piece, which fit somewhere in between The Cure and A Perfect Circle, have a sound that is beautiful and dangerous and a stage show you just can’t turn away from. It leaves you wondering what to watch. If you EVER get the chance to see them, run to get there. This is a great band. Check them out.

Next up, Redline Chemistry took the stage and wasted no time taking complete control of the crowd, which consisted of most singing every word to every song. Great crowd, great sound. Hearing the overwhelming power of the crowd as they sang along with songs like “Meds for the Hipocrite” and 98.9 the Rocks’s radio favorite, “The Empty”. They were engaging as they played some crowd favorites not in their normal set, as well as dropping some new material for everyone. One of these particular songs was the highlight of the night for me, “Becoming of Saints”.

For just one hour, they owned every heart and mind in Daveys Uptown.

Thanks for the incredible night guys, see ya in three weeks.

Tornado hits Cagney’s

Posted by: Faceless Entity   in Uncategorized

Two restaurants sustained damage: Pizza Royal lost part of its roof and Cagney’s Bar and Grill lost most of its roof, according to eye witnesses.

A sign at Cagney’s, 5617 Lake Ave., dangled on its side above the entrance to the bar, where workers had just stripped the venue’s stage that night, preparing it for a remodel.

Aleza Kennedy, who was bartending Thursday night, remembered propping the front door open because of the warm weather so her father could better enjoy his game of pool.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., though, the air turned and a cool breeze blew into the bar, so they closed the door. Seconds later, winds “ripped the door back open” and the bar and grill’s nine patrons rushed to the rear of the room.

“We heard all this racket like it was hailing,” Ms. Kennedy said, clutching a bottle of Bud Light. “And in 15 seconds, it was over. The sirens came on after that.”

She said she didn’t comprehend what had happened or the magnitude of the building’s damage until water began to pour down from the remaining false ceiling.

Water also drenched the interior of another South Side business just steps away at Pizza Royal, 5723 Lake Ave.
